Nowadays, face masks have become a very important part of our skincare routine. They can be found in all drugstores or they can be easily bought online in just a couple of minutes. But why are they so popular? What kinds of masks are there and how should we choose the best one for ourselves? If you would like to find out the answers to these questions, this is the perfect blog post for you.

Face masks have become very popular in the past couple of years because they are easy to apply, they make your skin look healthy in just a couple of minutes and also it feels very good to have them on our faces, doesn’t it?

There are many options regarding masks however, these are the three most basic types we should get to know first:

· Overnight masks: hydrate and may contain hyaluronic acid, ideal for mature or extremely dry skin

· Clay, sulfur, or mud masks: soak up oil and have a slight exfoliating effect

· Sheet masks: contain antioxidants, have a hydrating effect and if stored in the fridge also an anti-inflammatory effect

It is extremely important for us to know, how we should choose and apply them correctly. According to Dr. Chérie Ditre, — Director of the Skin Enhancement Center and Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania — while in some cases face masks can be beneficial, if not used properly they can also do much harm.

Therefore, after choosing the most comfortable mask type for ourselves, we should think about the other important aspects of choosing the perfect fit. The benefit of face masks depends on the ingredients they are made from. Common skin issues that may be addressed by the ingredients of face masks are:

· Acne: salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids

· Fine lines and wrinkles: antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and resveratrol; ferulic acid or retinoids such as retinol and retinaldehyde; and humectants such as hyaluronic acid

· Redness (rosacea): niacinamide

· Dark spots and pigmentation: kojic acid, retinoids, and vitamin C

It is also important to know when we should apply them since according to Dr. Ditre the best time to use these skincare products is after using a serum but before using the moisturizer, or in the case of nighttime masks, we should use them instead of our nighttime moisturizer. Furthermore, masks should only be used once a week in order to prevent skin irritation.

All in all, masks are an effective, easy and inexpensive way to treat our skin and give it a little extra glow however, we should always be conscious when choosing them out in order to prevent harm to our skin.
